IX Vietnam Day at MGIMO

On May 22, 2024, the University hosted the IX Vietnam Day, an event that had become tradition by this point, organized by the ASEAN Centre and MGIMO Vietnamese Student Association, with the support of the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the Russian Federation.

This year's event gathered around 700 guests - representatives of the government authorities, diplomats, entrepreneurs from Russia and Vietnam, renowned Vietnam experts, teachers and students from the country's leading universities. The Vietnam Day received wide coverage in the Russian and Vietnamese media. The Vietnamese Language Festival organized by the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was held in conjunction with the Vietnam Day, and the ‘I Love Vietnam’ contest was announced.

The Vietnam Day began with the opening ceremony of the photo exhibition ‘The 1954 Geneva Conference and its significance for modern Vietnam’. The Deputy Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Russian Federation Doan Khac Hoang and the Deputy Director of the ASEAN Centre V.V. Vershinina took part in the ceremony, addressing the audience with a salutatory speech. After the ceremony, guests of the Vietnam Day got acquainted with unique photographic records depicting the era of the Vietnamese people's struggle for independence. The exhibition has a digital component – those interested can get detailed commentaries on the photos by scanning a QR code.

The Vietnam Day program continued with a lecture by the Vice Chairman of the University Council of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities at Hanoi State University (VNU-USSH) Bui Thanh Nam on ‘Vietnam's Role in ASEAN’. The lecture was attended by students studying Vietnamese at MGIMO and students from other oriental studies universities, as well as their colleagues studying other ASEAN countries, teachers and researchers whose professional interests include the Southeast Asian region.

During the opening ceremony of the IX Vietnam Day, the participants were addressed by the Vice-Rector for Language and Pre-University Education I.S. Putintsev, the Deputy Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Russian Federation Doan Khac Hoang, the Head of the Vietnam Division of the Third Asian Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs I.S. Bayazov, the Director of the Department of Multilateral Economic Cooperation and Special Projects of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation N.V. Kondratiev. The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam G.S. Bezdetko also addressed the guests of the Vietnam Day in a video message, placing special emphasis on the long historical traditions of the Russian-Vietnamese friendship and the accomplishments made on the path of development of cooperation between the two countries in the modern era.

The key event of the Vietnam Day research track was the scientific conference ‘Vietnam in a Multipolar World: Approaches, Challenges and Prospects’, timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on principles of friendly relations between the Russian Federation and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The keynote speaker of the plenary session of the conference was the President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations, the guest of honor of the Day of Vietnam at MGIMO Phan Anh Son. Other speakers include leading Vietnamese and Russian researchers from MGIMO, ICCA RAS, SPBU, RUDN, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and Diplomatic Academy, as well as representatives of public organizations and business circles of the two countries. The session was moderated by the Deputy Director of the ASEAN Centre V.V. Vershinina.

The second session of the conference was dedicated to the reports made by young researchers. It was attended by undergraduate and graduate students specializing in Vietnam studies from the country's leading universities - Diplomatic Academy, IAAS of the Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, and RUDN. The event was moderated by the ASEAN Center expert N.S. Kuklin. In total, one and a half dozen reports were presented within the framework of the conference. The youth session of the conference was followed by a quiz prepared by the Vietnamese Association for the Russian students undertaking Vietnamese Studies, and tested them on the knowledge of the language, culture and modern society of Vietnam.

The culmination of the intense program of the IX Vietnam Day was a large-scale and vibrant cultural evening “Around Vietnam” held in the conference hall of the University. The evening was opened by the MGIMO Rector, the Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.V. Torkunov and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Russian Federation Dang Minh Khoi.

Among the honored guests of the event were the Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (2002-2007) Truong My Hoa, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Vietnam (2001-2004) A.A.Tatarinov, the President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) (1995-2018), the Head of the Republic of Kalmykia (1993-2010) K. N. Ilyumzhinov, the Vice Chairman of the University Council of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities at Hanoi State University Bui Thanh Nam, the Vice-Rector for Language and Pre-University Education I.S. Putintsev, the Head of the International Department E.V. Andreev, the Deputy Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Russian Federation Doan Khac Hoang, the Director of the Russian-Vietnamese Cooperation Development Fund "Tradition and Friendship" Nguyen Quoc Hung, the Head of the Department of Diplomacy K.M. Barsky, the Director of the Russian FIDE office B.T. Balgabaev, as well as the ambassadors of ASEAN member countries: the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to the Russian Federation Vilavan Yiaporher, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Thit Linn Ohn, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to the Russian Federation Cheong Loon-Lai, and the representatives of the diplomatic corps of other ASEAN countries.

The evening program included traditional and modern dances, songs, theatrical performances and opera compositions by the students of MGIMO and other universities in Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as invited professional artists. The concert also included an awards ceremony for the winners of the “Let's get to know Vietnam” contest. The evening was concluded with a traditional buffet of Vietnamese national cuisine. Throughout the day, a colorful fair of Vietnamese souvenirs was held in the atrium of the new MGIMO building.
